Full description

Formwork blocks replace timber shuttering. They are laid dry, without mortar, aligned and levelled; reinforcement is threaded through the cavities and the whole wall is then filled with concrete. The blocks stay in place as part of the finished structure.

Used for foundations, basement walls, retaining walls and fence bases — anywhere a reinforced concrete wall is needed without the cost and time of building and striking formwork. Leier also lists them for industrial and agricultural buildings and for water structures such as settling tanks and collection basins.

The wall thickness is chosen from the structural design, not from preference: 15 and 20 cm for fence bases and low retaining walls, 25 and 30 cm for basement walls and higher retaining structures, 40 cm where the wall carries a heavy load or holds back a significant height of earth.

Recommendation

The wall thickness and the reinforcement come from the structural design — do not choose them by eye, especially on retaining walls, where an undersized wall fails slowly and then all at once. Lay the first course on a levelled concrete footing and check alignment before going higher. Fill in lifts rather than in one pour, and vibrate lightly so the concrete reaches the full cavity without blowing the blocks apart.
